Llangelynnin Church

The project involved the conservation of:

• Fragments of 17th century wall paintings.
• The remains of a rood screen.
• 19th century pews with painted inscriptions.
• The cleaning and consolidation of an 18th century painted commandment board.

During repair works to the west wall of the church, a small fragment of paint was discovered approximately 2cm square. Works were halted immediately, whilst investigations were carried out to ascertain whether there were any more traces present. Small windows were opened around the area and it soon became clear that there was a substantial amount of painting still remaining. The removal of a section of limewash, which had completely delaminated, revealed a section of skeletal arm.

‘Windows’ were opened in various other areas on the west wall in search of other paint fragments, non were found and indeed it appears that the greater proportion of the plaster on the west wall is in fact replacement.
Emergency consolidation of exposed areas of painting was carried out, and fragile areas faced up with tissue. The area was then boarded over, allowing a gap for free flow of air. This protected the area during the repair work to the rest of the wall.
